Planning Your Outfit

A person who goes to court should dress like an attorney. Men should wear a suit and tie and females should wear a pantsuit or a nice dress. When they are standing in front of the judge, the judge should not be able to tell by looking at them whether they are the defendant or the attorney.

Arriving at the Court

A person should arrive at court usually 30 minutes before the hearing or trial is scheduled to begin. It doesn’t make a lot of sense to arrive before that because usually the courthouse won’t even open for the 30 minutes before the court schedules begin. So, if the docket begins at 9:00 a.m., they will open the courthouse at 8:30 a.m.

To get to the court from Baltimore, a person will need to take I-95 North to Maryland 279 which is exit 109A and head south. At the second traffic light, turn left onto North Street and once past the second traffic light turn left onto High Street. The Circuit Court will be on the Right. If you are coming from Pennsylvania, head south on Route 213. Once in Elkton, turn left on Main Street and travel 2 ½ blocks. The court will be on the left.

There are a small number of free parking spots located on the street directly in front of the court. There is also paid parking up and down Main Street. There are many different restaurants on Main street were a person can find something to eat for breakfast or lunch.

Electronic Equipment Policy

A person is allowed to bring in their cell phone or electronic devices to the courthouse and even in to the courtroom as long as they are turned off or set to a silent. If the bailiff hears a phone, they will take the phone until the end of the day.

Security at the Cecil Courthouse

The line for security varies depending on the time of day. When a person’s case is scheduled on a day when the docket is busy or right when the court opens in the morning or right after lunch, then the line may be longer. When the line is on the longer side the person can find themselves waiting for 10 or more minutes. Generally the security line should only take about five minutes to get through.
